This Special Issue is formed in collaboration with presenters at the Free and Open Source for Geospatial North America (FOSS4G NA) conference held in Reston, VA, USA, on November 3-5, 2025. This conference is facilitated by the Open Source Geospatial Foundation United States (OSGeo US) and other local OSGeo chapters in North America. The conference serves as a gathering place where attendees can forge meaningful connections, explore cutting-edge geospatial technologies, and spark fresh ideas that push the boundaries of what’s possible with open-source tools.

The articles in this special issue represent the breadth and depth of the work in our community around both developing and using open source geospatial software. Before these articles underwent the unique double-blind peer review process that Stacks uses, the concepts were presented to the authors’ peers at the FOSS4G NA conference where attendees could provide feedback and ideas to improve the work.

In this issue, I hope you will see not only the work of the authors but the community that helped support them. Open source geospatial tools and workflows are often built by the community, for the community. We work together. Developers create tools, the users provide feedback and examples, and both groups provide documentation and training.
